SLFSC Mission Statement The mission of the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club is to provide its members with the opportunity to participate with US Figure Skating and the various programs it sponsors. Through skating, your child can appreciate an active lifestyle, develop self-esteem and self confidence, and develop lasting friendships with other children and adults.
History The St Lawrence Figure Skating club has been in operation in Canton, New York for over 60 years! From a relatively modest beginning we have grown into a club with over 150 members, and the club now skates at both Appleton arena and the Canton Pavilion. We have many skaters who have earned gold medals in the US Figure Skating categories of Dance, Freestyle and Moves, and some of our skaters have gone on to skate professionally for shows such as Disney on Ice! We are proud of our long heritage of providing fun and instruction to our skaters.
2012 was a very special year for the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club because it marked our 60th anniversary of figure skating in Canton. Shortly after Appleton Arena was completed in 1950, ice time was provided to the pioneers of what was to become the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club. The first official board meeting was held January 20, 1952. In January, 1953, word came from the U.S. Figure Skating Association that the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club had been admitted as a member club. This made the club the only official figure skating club in the St. Lawrence Valley. Lake Placid was the nearest club to the East and the Clinton and Syracuse clubs the nearest to the South. To the north in Canada, Kingston, Brockville, Ottawa and Montreal were the closest neighbors. The first ice show of the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club as an official member of US Figure Skating (known then as the USFSA) was held on February 27, 1953. Over the years thousands of area youth and adults have skated as members in the club. In fact, many people who skated with the club when they were younger now have children skating with us!
